Build My Future is a hands on exhibits for high school youth to experience the construction and trade industry.
Build My Future Columbia County (BMF) hosted two events in 2019 and, much like other events, had to postpone 2020’s event due to the pandemic. “Build My Future is fortunate to be able to return after having to postpone 2020’s anticipated event,” says Bryan Zecher, “and you can expect additional vendors and a hugely educational event for your high school students this year!” BMF welcomes students from Columbia and surrounding counties to come out and explore the world of skilled trades and even meet technical school representatives who can give students information on how to complete the necessary certifications for various career paths. In previous years, BMF scholarships have been awarded to students who are interested in pursuing a skilled trade career path and will attend a technical college after graduation.
In 2014, Build My Future began in Missouri through a collaborative effort between the Ozark Region Workforce Development Board and the local Chamber of Commerce as a way to assuage the lack of workers and overall interest in skilled trades. In its inaugural year, Build My Future hosted 900 students and has grown each year since. Because of its success, other communities in a wide array of states have duplicated their efforts, which is how Build My Future Columbia County was born.
